When reporting a problem

Including these makes a fix far quicker:

Your macOS version and DiskCode version
What you scanned — a folder, your home folder, or all of Macintosh HD
What you did, what you expected, and what happened instead
A screenshot of the window, if the problem is something you can see

There is no need to send file names or folder contents unless you want to. They are rarely needed to diagnose a problem.

Common questions

Why does DiskCode ask me to choose Macintosh HD?: macOS lets an app from the Mac App Store read only the folders you choose in an Open dialog. Choosing Macintosh HD once lets DiskCode measure the whole disk, and it remembers that choice, so it does not ask again.
What does Full Disk Access add, and how do I turn it on?: Some folders — Mail and Safari data, for example — stay closed even after choosing Macintosh HD. To include them, open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Full Disk Access and switch DiskCode on. The setup screen has a button that opens that page. If DiskCode does not notice the change, quit and reopen it. Everything else works without Full Disk Access; folders it cannot read are reported, not hidden.
Can DiskCode delete my files?: No. DiskCode never deletes anything. Move to Trash asks first and then moves your selection to the Trash, where Finder's Put Back returns it to where it was. Nothing is ever selected for you, and one copy of every duplicate set is always kept.
Why is a large file not offered in Cleanup or Duplicates?: Files that macOS protects, and files in folders you are not allowed to change, are left out on purpose — the Trash could not take them anyway. Simulator runtimes are an example: remove those in Xcode under Settings → Components. They still count towards every size DiskCode shows.
Why can Search not find a file I just made?: Search answers from the names saved during the last scan, which is what makes it instant. Scan again and the new file is included.
Why does the total differ from Finder?: DiskCode shows On disk — the space a file really takes — beside Size, what it says it holds. Online-only cloud files are large in one column and nearly nothing in the other. On a whole disk, anything the scan could not reach is listed as not accounted for rather than silently dropped.
